Curated Walks
Date: Sunday 18 May 2008
Time: 11:00 - 14:00
Places: 12 per walk
Cost: £15

This series of curated walks around Smithfield, Greenwich to Deptford, and Crystal Palace offers the opportunity to explore the cultural and historic nature of three of London’s urban areas from a visual, sociological and literary perspective. Photographers can have their work loaded onto a flickr site alongside all participants having the opportunity of creating a collective eBook (using Proboscis’ Diffusion Generator).

Walk 1: Smithfield
Facilitator: Giles Lane
Meeting place: Farringdon Station, Cowcross Street, EC1
Meeting time: 12pm

This walk will drift through the ancient streets of Smithfield and Clerkenwell tracing its long and murky past. From the medieval Bartholomew Fair and the 18th Century Houses of Correction to the contemporary Central Meat Market and clubs, the area has a long and colourful history of public disorder and revelry. The walk will provide opportunities to investigate the many layers of urban inhabitation of its architecture and public spaces. Inspired by Proboscis' technique of Anarchaeology participants will 'excavate' their own sense of the significance of the area to London's life, and to 'incavate' their visions for how the area might continue to transform into the future. Participants will be given Notebooks to collect their observations, thoughts and experience.

Walk 2: Deptford to Greenwich
Facilitators: Simon Rowe & Ben Gidley
Meeting place: Goldsmiths, New Cross, London SE14
Meeting time: 11am

The walk will begin at Goldsmiths to Pepys estate in Deptford, the site of Simon and Ben’s Pepys Portrait Project, concluding in Greenwich and stopping at sites along with way. In the spirit of Walter Benjamin and Rachel Lichtenstein, the group will attend to the politics and ethics of memory and commemoration, and the role visual artists and researchers can play in shaping narratives of place. Some of the histories you will explore include the maritime period when Deptford and Greenwich were the heart of the British Empire through to more recent stories around race and resistance in the post-war era.

Walk 3: Crystal Palace
Facilitator: Ingrid Pollard
Meeting place: Goldsmiths, New Cross, London SE14
Meeting time: 11am

Ingrid will introduce the participants to the Crystal Palace park area which is of historical, architectural and cultural significance to Londoners, placed as it is, on the site of the original structure from which it takes its name. The park has a number of unusual features, including the recently renovated concrete dinosaurs, sculpted at a time when evolutionary theory was starting to enter the popular press and public imagination. Also, the area around the park is currently undergoing substantial regeneration with the planned extension of the London tube system. Participants will be invited to explore the cultural geographies of this space, and the layering of time, memory and history.
