| Darkroom & Printing Courses |
 |
|
|
| Throughout January we are running a series of talks and workshops around the theme of 'Experimenting with Photography'. As part of this series, we have scheduled three Alternative Processes worshops with Master of Historial and Alternative Process Print making, Terry King. |
|
|
|
| ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES: BROMOIL |
|
| |
|
Bromoil is an early photographic process that was popular in the first half of the 20th Century to enable ‘control’ to be exercised over straight black and white silver prints. The soft, paint-like qualities of the prints have recently led to some art photographers using the process once again.
Course participants will be asked to bring in either a large format negative or digital
file capable of printing to A4, from which we will create a negative on acetate. |

| TERRY KING: BROMOIL PRINTS |
|
|
|
| ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES: PLATINUM |
|
| |
|
Platinum prints are made by a monochrome printing process that provides a greater tonal range, tactility and subtlety than any printing method using chemical development. As such platinum prints are often favoured by collectors.
Course participants will be asked to bring in either a large format negative or digital
file capable of printing to A4, from which we will create a negative on acetate. |

| BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING |
|
| |
|
Learn the craft of traditional fine printing from one of London’s premier printers.
This intensive course takes students from the basic fundamentals of black & white through to the more advanced techniques utilised in the making of exhibition-quality prints. Taking place in our professionally equipped air-conditioned darkrooms, the course runs over two evenings and will cover topics such as resin-coated and fibre-based variable contrast papers, dodging & burning, pre-flashing, and archival processing.
Places are limited to enable each participant access to their own enlarger thus affording the opportunity to combine observation of particular demonstrations with the chance to put techniques into practice individually.
Photofusion supplies all paper and chemistry. You will be contacted nearer the time regarding what negs to bring.
This course only covers the printing of image s from already processed film -
it does not cover the topic of film processing itself. Participants should therefore bring previously processed negatives. Photofusion offers a full black & white processing service for those who do not already have their own processing facilities.

| TONING WORKSHOP |
|
| |
|
The toning of traditional black & white photographic prints has become a captivating part of the darkroom process. Many photographers tone their prints, but not all for the same reasons. Toning can be utilised to increase the archival permanence, or to add a range of colours that can vary in both subtlety and vibrancy.
This workshop is devoted to explaining the fundamentals of the toning process, concentrating in particular on the three most popular archival toners – selenium, gold and sepia. |
|
Course content
SESSION ONE: Discussion and demonstration of toning including:
Archival & non-archival toners
Colour vs. permanence
Fibre-based or resin-coated paper
The effect of paper warmth on toning
Direct & indirect toning
Off the Shelf kits and raw chemistry
The importance of the initial processing sequence
Health & safety
This will be followed by a demonstration of the selenium, gold (not for a gold affect) and sepia processes in the Photofusion darkroom using Ilford Warmtone paper.
Important Note: at the end of the session participants will be required to leave a well-exposed negative so that a suitable selection of prints can be produced for the next practical session.
SESSION TWO: Practical Session
Participants will tone their own set of prints from the pre-printed images. As well as the three archival toners, there will also be the opportunity to work with a traditional blue toner. As well as discovering the varying degrees of effects available from each toner, there will be the possibility to explore the results of certain multiple toning techniques.
The session will conclude with a discussion concerning the final drying and finishing of prints, including the use of hypo-clearing agents and hardeners, and more advanced techniques such as selective toning and dye toning.
All chemicals, papers, aprons and gloves will be supplied by Photofusion.

| LUMINOGRAMS: A PRACTICAL INTRODUCTION |
|
| |
|
| Luminogram: n. “A variation of the photogram in which the objects obstructing the light to form an image are not in direct contact with the photographic paper. Instead, the objects either cast a shadow on the paper if opaque, or filter light if transparent.”
This practical short course, led by photographic artist, Judith Lyons, will introduce participants to the art of the projected photogram and will give them the skills needed to produce photographic images using only a photographic enlarger. By the end of the course participants will have built up a small portfolio of images to take home. |
|
Course content
MORNING
Welcome & Introduction
The Art of the Luminogram: Brief outline of technique and examples of projected photograms by artists including Garry Fabian Miller, James Welling and Susan Derges.
Practical Demonstration: Taking the participants through the creation of a luminogram from start to finish.
AFTERNOON
Practical workshop: Participants have free rein to indulge their creativity and produce their own camera less images.
