A multi-artform exhibition
of photographs, printed textiles, video and music produced
by local young unemployed people on our multi-media,
music and design training programme 2002/2003. Lambeth has
a growing and vibrant arts and cultural sector. Its closeness
tocentral London also presents employment opportunities in
the arts and cultural industries. Lambeth has pockets of severe
deprivation, and many young people face unemployment and exclusion.
Discussions and research with local young people identified
an active interest in arts, music and digital media training
but found that few had the means to secure routes to training
and employment.
It is in response to the above that
three of Lambeth's leading artsorganisations, Raw Material,
London Printworks Trust and Photofusion, have come together
to provide Creative Connection, a specialist training
project for young people that offers access to the arts in
a practical way. With the aid of regeneration funds, the project
is targeted at young people, especially those at risk, creating
pathways of access and opportunity to employment. Creative
Connection involves training modules using the partnership's
specialist resources together with workshops led by professional
practitioners, including practical sessions producing live
performances, sound, and visual works. This show features a
selection of the work produced during our first year, by entry
level participants all of whom had no previous experience in
photography, digital technology, music, print and photo-digital
production.
Creative Connection is funded via Lambeths SRB6 programme,
London Arts and Clapham Park New Deal for Communities.
