Eddie Otchere | Hauntology
26 March- 25 April 2020
Photofusion is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Eddie Otchere. Hauntology is the culmination of a four-year exploration of the rural idylls of England. This unlikely confluence –a well known London based Hip Hop photographer with a predilection for rambling – has resulted in work that is utterly unique in its approach.
Otchere takes on the British landscape through the process of traditional photography, with cameras, materials and an aesthetic familiar to him through his Hip Hop work of the 90’s. He has walked and recorded the rural landscape, engaging with small communities, livestock and the natural world. The work has been printed in the darkroom with what he describes as “dead materials” revealing a disordered, sober landscape.
Hauntology not only treats us to the unique visual language of a B-Boy rambler, but it puts a spotlight on a very specific moment, a pivot, when an artist who is synonymous with a particular genre ventures into completely new territory. Otchere has approached his subject matter with naivete and openness while reminding us, largely through his printing techniques, of his photographic roots.
