This is a series of 13x13cm digital photographs, mainly taken behind windowpanes on trains, ferries, airplanes, in cafés or behind a pair of sunglasses I put in front of the lens to refract light.
I am short sighted but I did not know it at the time these pictures were taken, I did not wear glasses and so reality stayed soft and at times undecipherable. Photography then has been a way to maintain such softness and distance.
The pictures from this series have been taken over several years and ended up being a series only in hindsight, when I realised there was often an intrusion between me and the object, an additional lens (a windowpane, a surface, water) that is: an additional disturbance, a loss of clarity, of light. Giving way to imagination.
I prefer prints being this small so that the observer has to come closer, zoom in (which is what shortsighted people normally do if without glasses, they just come closer to you in order to see you).
