In 2011 I was commission to produce a local project of my choice in Herefordshire. I proposed to look at Hereford’s local waterway: The River Wye. The river starts in Wales and snakes across the English & Welsh border through Herefordshire, right through Hereford town, and down along into the Bristol Channel. I travelled the length of it last year, by foot for a lot of it, during many visits over the space of six months. I got to know the river very well, and much of the local community that did or didn’t use it. I discovered it was not as much a hub of activity as I had first imagined, at times it was the complete opposite. I spent many lonely days walking along the riverbank: just me, my
camera and my backpack for company.
During this long, and at times lonely, journey along The Wye I discovered an amazingly beautiful landscape, but also a very deserted and isolated one at times. I’m interested how emotions can be influenced by your surroundings, so I wanted this series of images to show the feelings I had experienced along my journey down the river, and not just be about the people I met or the views I saw along the way.
