This work is from an on going project of portraits. When I am taking the photo and working on the image afterwards I have three things in mind, firstly I want to convey the physicality of the subject, that this body is solid three dimensional object, Secondly I want to show that this physical presence has an inner life and inner existence. In this I am very much influenced by the photographs of the Swedish playwright August Strindberg. And his rather esoteric approach to photography. Working in the later part of the 19centuary Stringberg said he wanted to ‘photograph the soul’
The third aspect of the work is its materialisation as a print. I have very little liking for the ‘on screen image’ , and feel that the jobs not done until a successful print is made. These particular set of images (and the set is ongoing,) are printed at two sizes 73cm x95 cm and 92cm x115cm on smooth matt Arches cotton rag paper. They are printed from black and white bitmap files, so there is no tone just pure black. Due to the nature of the bitmap file the on screen image is a poor representation of the printed output.
