Should I Do a Photography MA?
In this interactive workshop, Lucy Soutter takes you through the pros and cons of pursuing a masters degree in photography, whether or not you studied photography at BA level. The session will explore what different applicants might be hoping to gain from study at master’s level, what courses can realistically deliver in the current educational climate, how to develop the working and networking habits of successful MA students, and ways that the same goals might be met by studying independently. Spoiler alert: the answer to the headline question is “not necessarily”! The session should provide food for thought for anyone interested in advancing their photography practice and career.
A multi-disciplinary background provides the foundation for Dr Lucy Soutter’s teaching and writing. After concentrating in Visual and Environmental Studies and English and American Literature at Harvard College, Soutter received an MFA in Photography from the California Institute of the Arts. Her 2001 Yale University PhD thesis in the History of Art, The Visual Idea, examined the uses of photography by first generation conceptual artists. Based in London since 2000, Soutter has taught at The London College of Communication, Sotheby’s Institute of Art and the Royal College of Art. She is the Course Leader of the Photography Arts MA at the University of Westminster and author of Why Art Photography?
