Threads Of Identity, a new exhibition in Gallery 2, features a compelling portrait series by Lambeth-based photographer Henos Adhanom.

Threads Of Identity is a visual exploration of what it means to live between two cultures: Eritrean and British, and the heritage that connects them. The series blends tradition and modernity, documenting how Eritrean identity continues to thrive in the everyday lives of people in London.

Photographed in a studio setting, the portraits range from solo to duo and group shots. Many of the subjects wear traditional clothing, while others include subtle symbols such as a flag, a necklace, or a gesture—quiet but powerful signs of cultural identity. The visual language draws on the textures, colours, and mood of Eritrean life, reimagined in a London context.

The title, Threads Of Identity, speaks to the strength and resilience of a culture that, like a thread, may seem fine but remains unbroken. It represents how identity is passed down through generations and carried into new environments, woven into daily life even when far from home.

This exhibition marks the beginning of an ongoing journey to document, preserve, and celebrate Eritrean identity in the diaspora: its beauty, its strength, and the many ways it continues to evolve.

‘Having the opportunity to exhibit work I developed at Photofusion, in the heart of my home borough, is very meaningful. Photofusion's support has been invaluable—not just in the creation of this work, but in building my confidence and momentum as a photographer. This exhibition marks a significant step in my career, and I am incredibly grateful!’ - Henos Adhanom
