Tailors of Port-au-Prince
At the end of the 20th century charities and organisations from the USA began shipping second-hand clothing into Haiti flooding the country with the used garments of the dominant culture. Within five to ten years this trade eliminated many of the local producers, most of whom were self-employed tailors who could provide for a family simply with their skills and a sewing machine. Now the only clothing still regularly produced by local tailors in Haiti are the school uniforms.
This project comprises of portraits of Haitian tailors along with photographs of pupils in their school uniforms. These portraits are posed and taken formally on black and white film with a medium format camera, printed by a master analogue printer, Debbie Sears, and hand-tinted by artist and long-time collaborator, Marg Duston, who painstakingly taught herself the almost lost skill.

Leah Gordon (born Ellesmere Port, UK) is an artist, curator, and writer. Gordon’s work amplifies ‘histories from below’ and recognises the role of carnival, folk traditions, grassroots religion in both performing and sustaining radical histories. Her film and photographic work have been exhibited internationally including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Dak’art Biennale. In 2022, Gordon’s book KANAVAL was published and her award-winning film, Kanaval: A People’s History of Haiti, was released. Gordon exhibited at documenta fifteen, Kassel and MOCA North Miami. In 2023 Gordon’s works were acquired by the Kadist Collection and the Royal Museums Greenwich and in 2024 she had works in group shows at Museum Van Loon in Amsterdam, UMOCA, Salt Lake City, and Musée du quai Branly, Paris. In 2025 she completed a new work, Monument to the Vanquished Peasant, for exhibition at the Herbert Museum as part of the Coventry Biennial.
