Philippa James - piggyback, 2023
from the series Once a Sl**
"Piggyback" captures a joyful, defiant moment of girlhood. It belongs to a larger series exploring the complexities of growing up female in a world shaped by misogyny, both online and off.
Once a Sl** has been exhibited at Photo London as winner of LensCulture Emerging Talent Award. It was exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery 2023 with TikTok gracing the cover of the catalogue of Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. The series was shortlisted for PhMuseum Women in Photography, exhibited in the Photo Vogue Festival, and won Portrait of Humanity.
Philippa James has recently been awarded DYCP funding from Arts Council of England to further develop her practice in 2025. In addition to her photographic practice, she is co-director of Women and the Photobook, a travelling reading room and research project.
