Simon Roberts Roberts - Low tide, Brighton Beach
The photograph is part of my ongoing enquiry into the cultural, economic and political landscape of contemporary Britain. Like with many of images, the human figures become actors on a kind of theatre set where various ideas of indentity and belonging are played out within a physical setting.
Simon Roberts (b.1974) is a prominent visual artist based in Brighton, UK. Renowned for his expansive, tableau-style photographs capturing the essence of the British landscape, Roberts’ artistic repertoire extends to encompass video, text, and installation pieces. This multifaceted approach allows him to explore profound themes of identity and belonging, as well as the intricate interplay between history, place, and culture.
He has exhibited widely and his photographs reside in major public and private collections, including Pallant House Gallery, Deutsche Börse Art Collection and the Victoria & Albert Museum. He is the author of several monographs including Motherland, We English, Pierdom and Merrie Albion - Landscape Studies of a Small Island.
Outside of his own professional practice he is involved with several not-for-profit organisations, working as an ambassador for FotoDocument and the Ian Parry Scholarship. He is a former advisor to Photofusion with whom he’s had a long working relationship.
