Taking its lead from the rich history of photography and activism in Lambeth, this five-week course will use the laminated exhibition as a framework for exploring feminist photography.

Laminated exhibitions were a form of DIY, low cost, collaborative exhibition making that was used predominantly in London in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The exhibitions are formed of photographs, text and collage elements adhered to large pieces of card which are then laminated so that they can be transported and exhibited easily.

The exhibitions were made by small groups of individuals looking to explore political themes that affected their lives such as government funding cuts, anti-racism and sexism, using art and design to communicate and amplify political messages. At a time when the mainstream art world was largely concerned with the formal artwork of white male artists, laminated exhibitions were a radical and subversive method of art making and sharing.

Laminated exhibitions are intimately connected to the history of Photofusion which began in 1979 as the Photo Co-op – a collective of activist photographers using their work to challenge the social and economic policies of Margaret Thatcher.

Curator Linsey Young will share her research into the history of laminated exhibitions, with the course exploring themes of feminist politics. As a group, we will work collaboratively to create a laminated exhibition, which will be staged at Photofusion.

The course will cover:

  • The history of laminated exhibitions and feminist approaches to collaborative making

  • A practical digital camera and studio lighting session

  • Hands-on experimentation making a laminated exhibition

  • A chance to share and reflect on outcomes together

  • The course will close with a week-long public exhibition at Photofusion of the laminates produced

No prior technical experience is needed. This course is open to anyone and is limited to a maximum of 10 people.

Linsey Young is a curator and researcher, whose work focuses on feminist histories. During the making of the exhibition Women in Revolt! art and activism 1970 - 1990 (Tate, 2023) she became aware of laminated exhibitions and realising there was limited recorded history is now undertaking a PhD at the Royal College of Art focused on the feminist history of laminated exhibitions and socialist photography workshops.
