BLK BXY JOY, was an exhibition that celebrated a young generation of POC artists who are redefining the picture of the Black experience. The exhibition was curated by Destinie Paige, a London based filmmaker, photographer and set designer, who has been a long-term mentee in Photofusion’s young creatives programme.

For the exhibition, Paige drew together fourteen emerging artists whose work pictured new visions of black masculinity and femininity. Paige’s vision was to put a spotlight on unseen and under-represented artists who want to present a picture of the black experience that moves away from trauma.

SIXTEEN x S2AU

Sixteen was an ambitious project that brought together the work of 16 photographers whose portraits and interviews with British youth offer a glimpse of what it means to be sixteen years old in today’s fractured country. The exhibition at Photofusion was the culmination of its year long tour across Britain, visiting 15 cities and towns, from Shetland to Belfast, via Hull and Newlyn. 

At Photofusion, the Sixteen project was turned over to Photofusion’s youth collective, Sorry 2 Annoy U (S2AU). They curated, programmed and planned the exhibition, including inviting local artists to respond to the themes addressed in the exhibition. This became Sixteen x S2AU

Sorry 2 Annoy U (S2AU) were a youth led collective based at Photofusion which aimed to create a space for young people to find a creative community whilst developing their skills as artists, curators and practitioners.

As young people growing up in London, they felt passionate about representing the identity of young people from all areas of society.

A NEW PROGRAMMES DESIGNED TO DEVELOP A NEW GENERATION OF CURATORIAL TALENT

Young Curators is a programme designed to open the resources of Photofusion to emerging young creatives from under-represented backgrounds. Each has a desire to pitch, develop, curate and install shows that speak to the concerns of their communities.

The project was developed and is run by D.Wiafe (Youth Engagement Manager). The programme has had two shows to date, BLK BXY JOY and SIXTEEN x S2AU, which were the most visited shows at Photofusion in their exhibition years.
