Filming in a Working Darkroom: Technical Guide

This section provides essential information for location managers, directors, and production crews to ensure a successful shoot within our functioning darkrooms and studio.

The "Working Darkroom" Environment

Photofusion is a fully operational facility. All enlargers, sinks, dryers, and plumbing are permanent fixtures maintained for daily professional use. To preserve the technical calibration and integrity of the facility, equipment cannot be moved or dismantled for camera angles.

Practical Effects & Technical Support

  • Chemical Use: To prevent contamination of our chemistry and ensure safety, the use of real photographic chemicals must be cleared with us in advance.

  • Expert Consultation: If your production requires a photographer to be filmed working authentically, or if you wish to use real chemistry for "action" shots, we can provide a Photofusion Technician at an additional cost to consult on-site and supervise the day.

We recommend contacting us as early as possible to discuss your project requirements and to arrange a site visit. For bespoke technical enquiries, please contact Liz at liz@photofusion.org.

Lighting & Equipment Authenticity

  • Safelights: The suites are equipped with a professional, fixed red-light system. For creative flexibility, we can provide additional portable safelights to enhance lighting levels or highlight specific angles.

  • Strict Equipment Policy: To protect the safety and calibration of our equipment, bulbs in any safelights or enlargers cannot be replaced or swapped. We do not permit the use of external bulbs, gels, or high-wattage alternatives within our fixtures.

  • In-Camera Reality: Please note that in a functioning darkroom, film loading occurs in 100% total darkness. Red light is used exclusively for B&W paper printing.

Power & Logistics

  • Power: All spaces run on standard 13amp domestic circuits. We do not have 3-phase power on-site.

  • Crew Capacity: Our darkrooms comfortably accommodate 6–8 crew members. For larger teams, we recommend hiring the Studio as a base of operations.
