Learn the fundamentals of shooting on analogue moving-image film in this hands-on course using two classic mechanical cameras: the Bolex H16 and the Bolex B8.
You’ll work with the iconic Bolex H16, shooting on 16mm film. Long celebrated by filmmakers and artists including Andy Warhol, Spike Lee, David Lynch, Wim Wenders and Tacita Dean, the H16 remains a popular and expressive tool for contemporary moving-image practice.
You’ll also be introduced to the Bolex B8, which shoots on Standard (Regular) 8mm film (not Super 8). Compact, robust and more affordable than 16mm, the B8 offers an accessible way to explore film-based filmmaking and experiment with a smaller gauge.
Hannah will show you how to load film into the cameras, then guide you in shooting two rolls of black-and-white film in the local area. You’ll then process the film in the darkroom, learning to load exposed film into Lomo tanks and develop them using two different processes:
Kodak D-76 black-and-white chemistry
Caffenol, a coffee-based developer made from household ingredients
After the course, processed films will be scanned off-site then made available as digital files via email. Dress in comfortable clothing, as darkroom work can be messy! No filming or photography experience is necessary.
Hannah Kemp-Welch is an artist and educator whose practice centres on sound and moving image. Her work evolves through collective learning and DIY approaches. She regularly delivers filmmaking courses with artist-led organisations, most recently South London Gallery and Southwark Park Gallery, alongside lecturing in Higher Education.
