Soil Chromatography with Aindreas Scholz - Saturday 2 May

£140.00

Dates: Saturday 2 May 2026, 11:00 – 15:00
Tutor: Aindreas Scholz
Website: www.aindreasscholz.com

Soil chromatography is a cameraless photographic process used to visually record soil vitality and microbial activity and is commonly practised within biodynamic agriculture. A soil extract is drawn through specially treated paper, forming a circular image in which patterns, colours, and textures emerge according to the soil’s composition.

In this hands-on course, artist Aindreas Scholz will guide you in creating your own soil chromatographic prints. Together, you’ll collect soil samples from around Brixton and build a shared soil map that connects land, memory, and local stories.

The course will cover:

  • a short history of the process (from biodynamic soil research to contemporary ecological art)

  • preparation and safe handling of materials

  • how to develop the image

  • how to read the resulting rings and patterns as a visual tool

You will leave with 2 to 3 chromatograms, and a clear method to repeat at home, plus notes/resources.

This course is suitable for all – with no previous photographic experience necessary.

By comparing “soil portraits”, together as a group you will open up conversations about pollution, care, inequality, and what healthy land means in the places we live.

Aindreas Scholz is a German-Irish photographer and lecturer based in London, working with cameraless, sustainable photographic processes. Winner of the Glover Raynor Prize, his practice connects ecology, materials, and environmental narration.

The course is limited to a maximum of 5 people. Please note, we require a minimum of 4 bookings to run the course.
