Join us at Photofusion on Thursday 27 August for a special in‑conversation with authors and visual activists Wayne Campbell and Wayne Crichlow, hosted by Photofusion Trustee Hannah John.
Hannah will be in conversation with both photographers about their new book Carnival of Resistance and the accompanying photographic exhibition at Market Row in Brixton Village, drawing out images and stories from 15 years of documenting Notting Hill Carnival from the inside.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival, which was held in response to the 1958 race riots. Carnival rose as a defiant street celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage, a way to rebuild community and insist on joy. Six decades later, it is the largest street festival in Europe, and Carnival of Resistance is a tribute to that history of resistance, survival and celebration.
This event is free to attend, and copies of Carnival of Resistance will be available for purchase and for signing on the night.

Bios:
Wayne Campbell is an acclaimed Black British documentary photographer whose career spans decades of capturing the heart, rhythm, and evolving political landscape of Black British life. His lens offers an intimate, multi-generational archive of London’s street culture, culminating beautifully in Carnival of Resistance, his fourth published photography book. Wayne is also a long-standing member of Photofusion.
Wayne Crichlow is an acclaimed Black British visual activist and social documentary photographer dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices, community resilience, and cultural legacy. Known for his striking, emotionally raw imagery, he highlights his commitment to documenting public joy as a radical act of communal defiance in his collaboration on Carnival of Resistance.
Hannah John is a cultural strategist, producer and organisational leader working at the intersection of art, storytelling and social impact, currently serving as Interim CEO of the Bristol Legacy Foundation and previously in executive leadership at Black Cultural Archives. Through her consultancy, WYN Services; governance work in education; British Council collaborations; and her role as a Photofusion trustee, she helps organisations and artists strengthen their practice, tell powerful stories, and expand access to culture within communities.
