The Lightbox Exhibitions -The Everyday Cyclist

  • Brixton Recreation Centre Ramp London, England, SW9 7QR United Kingdom (map)

Too many people still don’t see cycling as something for them.

If you look around this path, this space, this city no doubt you’ll see people using cycles every day. And yet, who identifies as a 'cyclist', the stories behind them and who is seen as one is often more complex.

Through powerful portraits and personal stories, this project aims to challenge your perception of who a cyclist is and who the spotlight should be shone on.

It celebrates those who create communities, lead groups and teach others.

It celebrates those who learn to ride as an adult, who reclaim their independence and keep testing their own limits.

It celebrates those who deliver goods, fix bikes, campaign for safer streets and even use cycles to save lives.

With the belief that changing the perception of cycling changes who feels welcome to ride, The Everyday Cyclist invites you to consider who you see here and where might you see yourself!

The Photographer Behind the Project

With a passion for cycling, The Everyday Cyclist has been created by professional photographer Becky Mursell.

Asking each person to choose the location for their shoot, she pedalled her bike over 3500km across London to photograph and interview over 120 people over the course of three years.

A keen cyclist herself, she claims she “couldn’t live in London without a bike.”

Quickly committing to using a cycle to commute when she moved to London in 2016, she immediately noticed the benefits to her mental health and bank balance.  Years later, she surprised herself by working in a bike shop to help support her career change into professional photography. It was here that her love for cycling truly grew.

Today, cycling has become synonymous for Becky with community, adventure and friendship plus testing how far she can ride in one go. 600km is currently the standing record.

Working with businesses, schools, freelancers and charities Becky is as passionate about photography as she is cycling. Available for commission, she would love to help bring your vision to life.

To date the project has been exhibited outdoors in the National Trust’s Osterley Park as well as Brockwell Park.
